I love Galactic Fractures. I cant wait to get to work on Mondays to download a show
and listen throughout my day. As a producer, this site has put me up on countless samples,
and I thank everyone involved so much for that. I’m definitely a fan of what you do here.
But yo… these file formats are fucking me up. Do you guys plan on going back to mp3′s at any
point? As odd as it may sound, the only free time I have to listen to the shows is while I’m
at work and I cant play these m4a’s and podcasts there. Any suggestions?
Leck… try DL-ing Hymn (or J-Hymn, whichever it is called), and then you can take the m4a and convert it to an MP3 file.
That might be your best bet… If you have quicktime player installed on your PC though, definitely try using the m4a.
It is pretty awesome to be able to skip to the beginning of each song in the playlist!!!
If you use quicktime or iTunes you can play m4a files. I suggest just doing that. I am not switching back to mp3′s cause its real nice to be able to jump tracks & embed pictures in the podcast.
Oh, I didnt know it would play with Quicktime. And I can jump tracks?!??! Word, I’m all for that.
BTW… have you ever thought of having a show that features songs that were sampled by these original joints? That’d be kinda dope. Play the original song, then the sampled joints.
On second thought, I’ve seen a lot of blogs recently that do that sort of thing. Maybe it’s better that you guys just stick to what you do.
Thanks again!!

Let’s see if anybody recognizes the samples in the tracks I have posted up there!
I’d also like to voice my criticisms at the more proprietary file format used for this show – I understand you can’t release a show without using some form of patented file format such as mp3, but mp4/aac files are some of the worst for linux listeners such as myself. Although Quicktime has been released for some linux distros, it has nowhere near the same number of features as the other OS’s, and some audio players have real trouble accessing files with the types of features you’ve used.
If this format is here to stay, why do we have to change our music software to accommodate the show (I’d be asking the same when I was a Mac user, as iTunes wasn’t my first choice of audio player)? Surely releasing an MP3 as the main file, and offering an M4U as an extended alternative would be a better idea? Even in the days of Galactic Fractures’ realplayer streaming (ah, the old retro girl logo in creams and browns ), I at least had alternative ways of listening to the show (admittedly, this involved a bit of hacking!)
Please consider that these ‘improvements’, while offering more functionality, are also excluding a significant proportion of your listeners.
Have you considered using VLC Player? That is on many platforms and plays enhanced podcasts fine (at least the audio stream in them). The m4a is definately here to stay. I love being able to jump between tracks, and see pics of the tracks I play.
Most people subscribe via the iTunes podcast anyway, so i don’t think its a real issue.
But I’ll upload a plain ole mp3 of the shows as well, just for you guys stuck in the stone age. hahaha (i kid, i kid). If I run out of server space, those will be the first files to go, however!
thanks for listening…
Yaaaayyyyy!!! Thanks PJ! I’ll check that track out too!
Cheers PJ. Appreciate the mp3 link
How interesting to have found someone who remembers Helena Hollins’ single “Baby, You’re Right”. Helena just recently performed at the Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill here in Hollywood, CA. It was a showcase, a new beginning to get back into the biz…. she did an exceptional job and will be back featured in her own show in the near future. I remember the soul stirring vocals on this record …. and equated it to James Brown’s work only by a woman. Fabulous!!! Wishing the very best for Helena’s return to music making.
I thought that you would have a bit more feedback posted but anyway, great blog.
